BIO:

Dave King is one of the most celebrated drummers in modern jazz. His contributions to the Minneapolis and New York jazz scenes are incalculable, and his imagination and boundless enthusiasm behind (and around) the drum set are singular and stunning. He has performed in 75 countries on six continents, and has been a member of bands like The Bad Plus, Happy Apple, Halloween Alaska, 12 Rods, Love Cars, The Gang Font, and others. He has also recorded or performed with Bill Frisell, Joshua Redman, Jeff Beck, Tim Berne, Mason Jennings, Mark Morris Dance Company, Haley Bonar, Meat Beat Manifesto, Craig Taborn, Jason Moran, David Torn, Atmosphere, and many others.

Dave King plays Ellis Drums and Zildjian Cymbals with Vic Firth sticks.

Improvising is to create and perform spontaneously. It can be one of the biggest pain points for many drummers. If you add a layer of intention and of musicality over it, improvising becomes a totally different beast and an extremely demanding discipline.
Dave King is a drummer and composer, best known as a founding member of the jazz groups 'The Bad Plus' and 'Happy Apple'. King has recorded and performed with numerous artists over the past 20+ years. In December of 2013, Dave King gave a drum clinic right here at the Chicago Drum Exchange.
This is the entirety (minus two short omissions) of Q&A session/masterclass/book signing that Dave King gave at Lawrence University on February 1st, 2013. I've put together a guide to the video, but Dave covers many topics within each of these talking points that address many different issues and ideas.
